Abstract

Summary The effect of alloxan on normal sheep and on others in which the pancreatic duct had been ligated for variable periods was studied. If the animals survived there was, no appreciable difference in the reaction between the two groups as far as blood sugar findings were concerned, i.e. , the pancreatic sclerosis did not prevent, or was, not severe enough to prevent, the diabetogenic action of alloxan. The sheep was more susceptible tot a general toxic effect of alloxan. Although there was some individual variation of response, after a latent period they showed toxic effects manifested by a hyperacute illness due possibly to some violent, cardio-vascular upset, and the production of severe renal cortical necrosis which must have contributed to death.
