Abstract

During the early 1620s, miracles began to happen at Verdelais, not far from Bordeaux. After an enquiry, the archbishop handed over the sanctuary to administrators before establishing a community of regulars there in 1627. Within a few years Verdelais became the most important sanctuary for miracles of the whole region. A substantial archive enables us to follow at close quarters the birth of an early modern sanctuary, and to follow the mechanisms for the diffusion of rumour, as well as the complex relations between popular devotions and the priorities of the Catholic hierarchy. The outcome of the interaction of these factors, Notre-Dame de Verdelais became part of the great movement of Catholic reconquest during the first half of the 17th century.
