Abstract

Oily sludge is one of the largest categories of wastes generated by oil industry petroleum production and petroleum refinery plant. Its release to the environment is strictly controlled and it is classified as priority environmental pollutants by the US Environmental Protection Agency. So, it must be treated. Wet peroxide oxidation (WPO) and catalytic wet oxidation (CWO) of oily sludge were investigated. The result indicated that homogenous catalyst (NaHCO3) showed effective removal for pollutants. WPO was an effective process for removing organic compounds from oily sludge. This paper may supply a new method of treating oily sludge for the oilfield.
