Abstract

Abstract A preliminary study was conducted to test the feasibility of using polyurethane foam (PUF) as an adsorbent material for removing toluene diisocyanate (TDI) from PUF production plant exhaust air. Results obtained suggest that a particular grade of PUF (high density, low in TDI) may serve as a reasonably efficient material for TDI removal, provided the air containing TDI is dried before adsorption. This brief study suggests that an increase in humidity decreases PUFs capacity to adsorb TDI. The adsorption work was compared to water scrubbing of TDI. Work on the optimization of our aqueous scrubber indicates that the efficiency of this method to remove TDI may be increased by the addition of a catalyst or surfactant.
