Gallinaceous game birds are apparently more susceptible to infection with Syngamus trachea than chickens. A Nebraska game bird farm recently discovered that S. trachea was killing many of their birds and impairing the health of the entire flock. The treatment usually recommended for gapeworm is barium antimony tartrate. This drug is not commercially available, so a newly developed anthelmintic, Disophenol22Disophenol, the generic name of 2,6-diiodo-4-nitrophenol, is marketed as D.N.P., injectable hookworm remedy for dogs, by American Cyanamid Company. was administered.S. trachea is a hookworm-like nematode which lives securely attached to the wall of the trachea feeding on blood of the host. Anthelmintics which act in the intestinal tract have no action against S. trachea. Disophenol was chosen because of its specific action against hookworms. It was injected subcutaneously into nearly 800 adult pheasants and its toxicity and efficacy were evaluated.ANTHELMINTIC TESTS WITH DISOPHENOLToxicity of Disophenol for pheasants was determined. D.N.P.2, a proprietary formulation containing 35 mg. Disophenol per ml. was the source of medicament. The …
