Abstract
The adsorption of simazine, chlorotoluron, isoproturon, atrazine and diuron from water has been studied using a range of Hypersol-Macronet TM polymers. Batch equilibrations have been performed in single component and multicomponent mixtures of trace pesticides in the μg1 –1 (ppb) concentration range. Selectivity of pesticides is observed and explained in relation to the binding mechanisms which involve hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding. Isotherms are fitted by the Freundlich expression and the parameters are used to compare sorption with published information on commercially available activated carbons. The atrazine capacity of Hypersol-Macronet TM polymer MN-200 is less than Chemviron F-400 at an equilibrium concentration of 0.01 μmol –1 but the binding energy of pesticides is significantly lower on the polymer phases.
