Abstract

In this chapter the removal of nickel ions from a packed bed of ion-exchange material under an applied potential is studied. This process involves the use of an electrodialysis type cell in which the centre compartment is filled with a packed bed of ion-exchange particles. The bed width, concentration of nickel in the resin and electrolyte concentration were varied. Emphasis was placed on the rate of nickel migration into the concentrate compartment, the current efficiency and the effective mobility of nickel in the system. The purpose of the study is to aid in the development of a system for the continuous removal of heavy metal ions from dilute solutions. The contents of this chapter have been published in the Journal of Applied Electrochemistry (P.B. Spoor, W.R. ter Veen, L.J.J. Janssen, J. Appl. Electrochem., 31, 523530 (2001)).
