Abstract

The photo-catalytic activities of several Bi2WO6 with various activated carbon (AC) contents were studied for the photo-catalytic degradation of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and microcystin-RR (MC-RR) under simulated light. Some characterizations of the materials were carried out. Activated carbon increased the reaction rates in the degradation of MC-LR. A significant improvement in the photo-catalytic activity under simulated light was achieved with the 5 wt% activated carbon content when compared with pristine Bi2WO6 or with materials with other content activated carbon additions. Factors besides adsorption capability and surface areas effects may also contribute to the improvement. The kinetics of photo-catalytic degradation of MC-LR and MC-RR by Bi2WO6-activated carbon were explored. The application of the catalyst under sunlight was proven to be better than under simulated light.
