Abstract

In the present study,we propose to study endotoxin absorption/removal processes in collagen solutions by taking advantage of the unique adsorption characteristics of lectin molecules specifically onto the poly-saccharide components in endotoxin. The surface of silica beads was pretreated with acid-etching process leaving reactive OH groups which facilitated the adoption of amino-siloxane group for grafting of lectin molecules. The preliminary results demonstrated that high levels of adsorption of endotoxin were all readily achievable(99%) under grafting formulation with various concentrations of lectin, such as 1,2 and 5 g/L.The results also indicated that 30 pieces of lectin-grafted silica beads would efficiently adsorb endotoxin from a volume of 9.6 mL collagen solution. For future work,we plan to evaluate designs of column adsorption method and system for the removal of endotoxin in collagen material.
