Abstract

As the number of industries is increasing day by day, being need of hour, to fulfill several needs but are also releasing a bulk of pollutants in effluents in form of dyes, metal ions, pesticides, etc. Said pollutants are causing a severe damage to environment and, of course, to human health. Dyes, being colored substances, are one of the major water pollutants and textile industries are major source of these pollutants. A number of techniques have been used for the treatment of dye infected waste water such as adsorption, ozonations, nano-filtration, cloud point separations, polyglycol systems, oxidation, coagulation, chlorination, reverse osmosis (RO), solvent extraction and ultrafiltration, etc. Micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) is one of the useful membrane techniques to serve the said purpose using a surfactant having charge opposite to the dye molecule. In this article, the effects of various parameters, i.e., concentration of surfactant, ionic strength, pH, electrolytes, trans-membrane pressure, temperature, concentration of dye, and rejection percentage on performance of the MEUF process for effective removal of dyes from textile effluents have been studied.
