Abstract

ABSTRACT The adsorption behaviours of phenolic isomers, catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ), on an inexpensive adsorbent, corncob, were studied. The optimum conditions required for the extractions of CC and HQ from aqueous media by the ground corncob were comprehensively studied. Further, the concentrations of CC and HQ were electrochemically determined with a palladium nanoparticles/poly(1,2-diaminoanthraquinone)/glassy carbon modified electrode (PdNPs/p1,2-DAAQ/GC/ME) by a square wave voltammetry technique in 0.05 M perchloric acid. It was confirmed that the maximum uptakes of 100 ppm CC and 100 ppm HQ were obtained at pH 8 and shaking time of 1.5 h with an adsorbent (corncob) dose of 0.1 g. The adsorptions of CC and HQ by ground corncob followed the second- and first-order models determined by the Freundlich adsorption isotherm, respectively. Corncob effectively adsorbed phenolic compounds from wastewater.
