Abstract

This chapter deals with remote sensing application of mangroves, biomass estimation of mangrove forest and forest health monitoring using geoinformatics. At the very beginning, the recent trend and scope of remote sensing technology has been discussed. Typical forest mapping techniques like feature delineation, vegetation indices and change detection are explained in addition to indices-based mangrove forest mapping. In the context of biomass estimation, Lidar and Synthetic Aperture RADAR (SAR) techniques are performing the best; therefore, the details of these techniques have been brought. Moreover, mangrove biomass estimation by mapping mangrove canopy structure and forest stand height is outlined. Finally, the application of geoinformatics (close-range and far-range remote sensing techniques) in forest health and stress monitoring is explained
