Abstract
Abstract The role of UNESCO is to promote international peace and security through cooperation in the fields of education, science and culture. In view of eradicating illiteracy, overcoming unsustainability of natural resources, confronting environmental problems, safeguarding historical monuments, and preserving natural and cultural heritage, UNESCO develops international research programmes and makes best possible use of new advances in technology, namely remote sensing and GIS, in order to effectively carry out activities in the framework of its programmes.
