Abstract

This paper presents the results of an investigation into the effectiveness of the muWAVE VISION for the detection of internal hot spots in porcelain and polymer clad high voltage devices in the laboratory. The devices consisted of CVTpsilas, surge arresters, and CTpsilas. The results show The muWAVE VISION is effective in the detection of hot spots in CVTpsilas and there is strong correlation between changes in the electrical properties (power factor, partial discharge, and capacitance) and the increase in the apparent temperature at the hot spot location of the device under test as measured by the muWAVE VISION. Its effectiveness for the detection of hot spots in other devices requires more testing of such devices. Initial results are encouraging. The results are discussed in terms of the potential applications of the muWAVE VISION for different kinds of devices.
