Abstract

We propose a remote coding scheme by using the cascaded encoder for passive optical network monitoring. The cascaded encoder is composed of 1×2 power splitter/combiners and fiber Bragg gratings, located at the remote node that can simultaneously realize optical splitting and coding. We also present the cascaded encoder design, simple network recognition algorithm, and the false alarm rate evaluation. The experimental system with eight optical network units is established for the feasibility of the proposed scheme. The results show that the proposed scheme can successfully identify the status of drop fiber links, including the case with the same fiber length.
