Abstract

Two events occurred at sister facilities that resulted in poor patient outcomes from failure to respond to concerning electronic fetal monitor (EFM) tracings. Multiple gaps contributed to the adverse outcomes, including subjectivity of EFM interpretation, changes in tracings over time, the current shortage of experienced nurses, and volume surges. Our vision was to establish a staffed fetal telemetry room to continually monitor, analyze and collaborate on EFM tracings. This new room (called the HUB) would be remote and designed for review of multiple EFM tracings real time without other clinical distractions. This model aligns with the mission of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses to support nurses who care for women through research, education, and advocacy, with the goal of making a difference in the lives of newborns.
