Abstract
The last 50 years have seen remarkable progress in our understanding of ship waves, as well as many other scientific topics in ship hydrodynamics. Here is a historical narrative, written from a very personal perspective, about ship waves in this period, with technical details, which I hope will stimulate the interest of the younger readers. It shows how a life in research can be very exciting and personally rewarding through the pursuit of scientific challenge with others.
