Abstract

(Int J Obstet Anesth. 2019;39:29–34) Remifentanil patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) has been an analgesic option for labor on several obstetric units for 15 to 20 years. It is not as efficacious as epidural analgesia for providing pain relief during labor, but it is considered to have a satisfactory analgesic effect. However, there have been reports of respiratory arrest in obstetric patients receiving remifentanil PCA. The current investigators routinely offer remifentanil for labor analgesia at their institution. They conducted this retrospective study to determine delivery outcomes in women receiving remifentanil PCA compared with women receiving intramuscular (IM) diamorphine or epidural analgesia.
