Abstract

ABSTRACT We experimentally investigate the prosocial preferences of undergraduates at a military college and a Christian university. These students were more altruistic and generous, preferred more equality, and were less willing to punish unfair offers than those at traditional colleges. This study highlights the important connection between institutional norms and prosocial preferences. We do not find a strong correlation between real-life prosocial choices and prosocial preferences elicited from the experimental settings.
