Remembering Ruth C. Enquist

Abstract

Ruth C. Enquist died on September 1, 1997, after an extended illness. Mrs Enquist had a long and dedicated association with many organizations in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery. She started with the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology as a secretary in 1970. When the academies divided, she continued her association with the American Academy of Otolaryngology as director of meetings and memberships. When the AAO-HNS moved from Rochester, Minn, to Arlington, Va, in 1982, she began her own business, We Plan Meetings Inc, while she continued to serve as managing editor of the AAO-HNS journal, Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. As president of We Plan Meetings, Mrs Enquist served as a meeting planner for the Department of Otolaryngology at the Mayo Clinic, the joint meetings of the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery and the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons, The World Congress of Otorhinolaryngology, the Pan American Congress of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, and the International Conferences on Head and Neck Cancer. Her dedication and skillful management were an integral part of these wellorganized and successful meetings. Her last meeting was the Fourth International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer held in Toronto, Ontario, in 1996. Mrs Enquist’s accomplishments were acknowledged by many organizations. She received the Presidential Citation from the American Society of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery in 1991, The Walt Disney World Honorary Citizen Award in 1992, a Presidential Citation from the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery in 1996, and a Presidential Citation from the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons in 1997.
