Abstract
We discuss the effect of Schwinger terms on the Wick rotation necessary to derive the Cottingham formula for electromagnetic mass shifts. We give a simple condition which allows us to construct a covariant and guage-invariant virtual Compton scattering amplitude on which the Wick rotation can be performed.
