Abstract
The AS FEMO method was applied in order to calculate the absorption maxima in the spectrum of symmetrical cyanine dyes and polyenes. An improvement of the theoretical λmax values for cyanines can be obtained by introducing the ``resonance'' barrier in the FE model. The height of this barrier is determined by the stabilization energies of the cyanine nuclei.
