Remarks on the Second Eigenvalue of a Symmetric Simply Connected Plane Region

Abstract

In this paper we study the second eigenfunctions of the fixed membrane eigenvalue problem on a symmetric domain. Using the notion of axially symmetric functions we prove a comparison theorem for two eigenvalues when the nodal sets of the corresponding eigenfunctions are known. This result implies that the second eigenvalues of certain membranes are nondegenerate.
