Abstract
Symmetries play a central role in the weak nonlinear theory of bifurcations. I present two examples of physical situations where symmetry is important. First, the alternating release of vortices in the Bénard-von Karman wake of a cylinder, then an implementation of the continuous translation symmetry in a modified version of the Lorenz model.
