Abstract

This article weighs the claims to authenticity of historical and fictional forms of reenactment by studying the Aubrey/Maturin novels of Patrick O'Brian and the subsequent waves of reenactment and commentary that have grown up around them. Considered in turn are the movie Master and Commander, the novels themselves and O'Brian's historical sources.
