Abstract

Abstract The article analyzes the political careers of two spiritual leaders from Habsburg Galicia, the rabbi Joseph Samuel Bloch und the Roman-Catholic priest Stanilaw Stojalowski. As press entrepreneurs and Imperial Council members they played an active role in transforming their communities of believers into communities of opinion within the imperial public sphere. I argue that the Habsburg Empire was decisive in this process not only by setting up the structures for political-religious interaction but also as a positive idea in the programs of both politicians. The parallel analysis of the two biographies illustrates the potential, the limits, and the impact of their agency in the late Habsburg Empire.
