Abstract
Abstract Religious vocations in the Christian sense have come to denote specialized service to the church. Derived from the Latin verb, vocare , meaning “to call,” the term “vocation” was applied to those chosen by God and confirmed by the church to enter the priesthood or religious life. The church's sacrament of holy orders by which one enters the clergy, as well as the taking of religious vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, became the marks of those with a “religious vocation.”
