Abstract

In any discussion of end-of-life care, the cultural and religious beliefs of the individual who is dying must always be a consideration. This chapter will present, in the most general terms, a brief overview of some of the afterlife beliefs found in several of the world’s major religious traditions – Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Of course, individuals within any tradition will present a range of adherence to any of the beliefs described, but the following material will at least provide a base for further understanding of afterlife beliefs.
