Abstract

Abstract This chapter discusses and examines the tourist motivations to visit religious (Buddhist) sites, and addresses the role of religious tourism in regional development among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The motivation of visitors is discussed by way of a case study of religious tourism in Thailand, before investigating the opportunities and challenges for future integration among ASEAN members, particularly in relation to this important niche. The chapter also explores the strategies required to overcome barriers to develop religious tourism in the region. Such strategies include the need for transparent objectives, community consultation and integrated national and regional plans.
