Abstract

Religious law encompasses longstanding traditions such as Jewish law, Canon law, Islamic law, Hindu law, and Buddhist law, as well as modern legal codifications for members of specific religious communities. This entry describes common features shared by most or all traditions of religious law including a class of semi‐autonomous experts, a focus on interpretation and transmission of the textual sources, and an emphasis on the rules for ordinary life.
