Abstract

Abstract Chapter 11 traces the geographical distribution and changing nature of sanctuaries across the archaic period. The iconographic evidence from pottery and from the votive assemblage arguably reveals changing attitudes towards the gods. The history of building on the Athenian acropolis, which is particularly rich in the sixth century, is described in some detail. The pattern of Athenian festivals is explored through Solon’s calendar and sixth-century festival innovations, including the revamped Panathenaia and the City Dionysia. The relationship between central and local determination of religious activity is investigated, along with the role of religious cult in relations between town and countryside.
