Abstract

Two sets of hypotheses are tested. The first deals with the relationship of religiosity and education to ethnic distance, when personality variables are controlled. It is found that orthodoxy and extrinsic belief are not related to ethnic distance; church participation and formal education are negatively related. The second set of hypotheses examines individual influence of each personality variable on ethnic distance when the remaining variables are controlled. The finding here is that anomia, status concern, conservatism, withdrawal tendencies, and antisocial tendencies are not related to ethnic distance; authoritarianism is the only personality variable related positively to it; none were negatively related.
