Abstract
This is the story of a conflict between a highly confrontationalist Protestant mission in the mid-nineteenth century and Indian religions, which opens out a wider debate on the nature of imperialism and proto-nationalism. It does so around the themes of ideology, cultural contact and conversion. The text should be of interest to students of modern Indian history, the history of religions and of missionary organizations in India.
