Abstract

Two of the largest rallies ever held in the nation's capital were the 1995 Million Man March and the Promise Keepers rally of 1997. More remarkable than the size of these events is the fact that (a) both were spiritual in nature, (b) participation in each was restricted to males, and (c) participants of the Mill ion Man March were exclusively African Americans whereas the Promise Keepers rally was predominately attended by whites. Both sought to increase the spiritual commitment of men in bettering the condit ions of their families and communit ies. The assumption underlying the mobilization of these movements is that spirituality is positively related to a sense of well-being and other-directedness.
