Abstract

AbstractUsing the evidence of her poems and novels, Dr Chitham provides a detailed reassessment of the views that Anne Bronte had on religion, nature and art. Demonstrates the course that Anne took in thinking through such problems as pre-destination, punishment and guilt. Argues that the family's cultural and religious background was more supportive and influential than hitherto realized, but also indicates how different her views were to those of Charlotte, Emily and Branwell. Shows how Anne's views are reflected in the views of Helen Huntington and other characters in her novels. This is the text of the Annual Bronte' Lecture given at Haworth in May 1999.
