Abstract
In order to obtain a whole picture of the actual social and political role of religion in our present-day reality, the sphere of relations between church and state, and the characteristic features of the implementation of the constitutional principle of freedom of conscience, in autumn 1993 the Religion in Modern Society Research Center of the Russian Independent Institute of Social and National Problems conducted sociological surveys in eight regions of Russia—Moscow, St. Petersburg, Buriatia, Dagestan, Tatarstan, Voronezh Oblast, Nizhnii Novgorod Oblast, and Omsk Oblast. A total of 1,200 persons were surveyed using the random selection method. In forming the sample aggregate, the Center considered ethnic structure, sociodemographic and occupational characteristics, and distribution of traditional religions.
