Religion in Liquid Modernity: Collective Manifestations of Religion in Secularizing Dutch Society

Abstract

This chapter argues that religion is partly becoming liquid, that is: network-based, focused on identity issues, and with a central role for experience. It distinguishes three categories of relevant phenomena, varying in the extent to which they take place within the religious field: fully, partly or hardly. This typology is used to defend a correction to the thesis that there is only a limited place for religion in liquid modernity. The chapter focuses on the manifestation of religion outside the congregation, mainly within the Dutch religious landscape. The interplay of solid and liquid religion deserves attention. Observers of religion should note the presence of religious activities, themes and rituals in other social spheres. Liquid modernity presents us new currents, some of which have their origin in old beds. There is religion in liquid modernity, and this means crossing boundaries. It emerges in various social spheres, connecting the public and private. Keywords: Dutch religious landscape; liquid modernity; religion
