Religion in Britain at the close of the 20th century: A challenge to the silver lining perspective

Abstract

Abstract The description of contemporary Britain as ‘secular’ is contested by those who claim that, the state of formal religion notwithstanding, there remains considerable interest in religion. This essay presents evidence on a large variety of indices of religious behaviour and belief, and challenges the critics of secularisation to provide similar evidence for their discovery of latent religious belief.
