Abstract

The thesis of this paper is that Max Weber's thought regarding the role of certain cultural factors in modernization has yet to be correctly understood or adequately applied in contemporary studies. The point will be illustrated by analyzing two articles by eminent authorities in a recent volume edited by Myron Weiner. Weiner's book purports to summarize and popularize respected current opinion on modernization. Accordingly, each of the two essays considered here is expressive of an influential school or style of thought. Yet both exhibit biases and lacunae that could be corrected by a better understanding of the Weberian frame of reference.
