Abstract

While much scholarly work has concentrated on the relationship between religion and attitudes toward same-sex sexual relations, religious differences in terms of views on gay marriage or the right of gay couples to adopt children remains under-researched. This is particularly the case when a range of religious measures are considered. With this omission in mind this chapter focuses on the influence of religious practices, beliefs in and about God, and subjective religious views on attitudes towards gay rights. Using nationally representative data from Northern Ireland, the results suggest that whereas religious practices and, to a lesser extent, beliefs about God have a significant net effect on attitudes towards same-sex sexual relations and the right of gay couples to adopt children, only religious practices, namely affiliation and church attendance rates, determine views about gay marriages.
