Abstract
The work examines the religious and social resistance strategies of practitioners of the Umbanda in the State of Santa Catarina in the mid-twentieth century that consolidated the foundations on which the local Afro-Brazilian religiosity is currently structured. The Umbanda is the pioneer of the Afro-Brazilian religions and it represented an important strategy for its supporters, since in their history, it was the one that more quickly climbed the steps of the social acceptance, both by its syncretism format, originated from its historical formation, such as the fact of including the diversity of social and ethnic extracts present in the population.
