Abstract

The effect of deep cerebral stimulation was investigated in 6 cases of severe pain, most of which were due to terminal carcinomatosis. In only 1 case was a satisfactory result obtained, and in one other case some improvement was noted following stimulation. In view of the low probability of success, the procedure, although of interest, does not appear to have definite therapeutic value at this time. It may, however, become useful if further investigation of the limbic system reveals accurately defined areas in man where stimulation regularly produces a rewarding effect.
