Abstract

The Feynman diagrams which dominate the estimates of the electric dipole moment of the neutron with the Kobayashi-Maskawa type of CP violation are considered. Existing estimates of long-distance contributions and relics of short-distance contributions, considered in this paper, are shown to be complementary and roughly of the same magnitude. The resulting value of | D n e | , which does not exceed 10 −32 cm, allows a marked distinction between the Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism and most of other CP-violating mechanisms.
