Abstract

Solar and wind power based mix system with energy storage unit provides a reliable energy alternative above the conventional diesel generator based system commonly used by remote consumers. In this context, this paper develops a methodology for determining the PV/Wind renewable energy mix system for satisfying the electrical needs of a remote location. The reliable PV/Wind renewable energy mix system is calculated based on loss of load probability criteria. The hourly output power of PV/Wind mix system is mapped with the hourly load variation of the study area and loss of load probability reliability index is estimated through Monte Carlo simulation technique. Furthermore, battery storage system is introduced into the system and loss of load probability (LOLP) reliability index at different battery size and PV/Wind mix are calculated. The calculated values of LOLP are plotted against each of the PV/Wind renewable energy mix system for the cases of no battery storage and different size battery storage.
