Abstract

Micro-grid can be classified as grid connected or isolated. In isolated micro-grid it acts as a small power system with its all part (generation, transmission, and distribution). The main driver for isolated micro-grid is the availability of local energy resources. Hybrid Renewable energy system (HRES) is a combination of one or more renewable resources such as solar Photo Voltaic (PV) and wind turbine (WT) with other technologies such as batteries to supply electric power systems. Solar and wind are clean energy sources with enormous potential to alleviate grid dependence. The HRES is an excellent solution for electrification for rural regions where the grid extension is not economical and difficult in some region in Egypt. This paper study the effect of adding solar PV and WT systems to the micro-grid in order to improve the isolated operation of the micro-grid. The study performs the Loss of Power Supply Probability (LPSP) based on adding the same capacity of solar PV and WT to the isolated micro-grid. The LPSP and the cost of energy (COE) are the two main factors will be introduced. A typical case study of the micro grid system located at Hurghada Egypt will be analyzed in details. The model compute the LPSP will be introduced. The results are presented show the optimal model of solar PV with WT reduce the LPSP and COE of the micro-grid.
