Abstract

There are numerous tabulated data available in the literature on electronic stopping of protons in LiF and CaF 2 at energies near the stopping power maximum. Problems with calculation of the stopping cross section for these compounds using Bragg's rule arise due to a large binding effect (up to ∼ 20%) which is expected in these compounds due to the ionic character of the bond. Another question is that of the purity of these samples. We present measurements on the gas content in samples of LiF and CaF 2, produced in high vacuum and exposed to gases (air and argon, respectively) over a short period of time. These measurements have been performed by means of elastic recoil detection (ERD) and are sensitive to hydrogen as well. In all samples of fluorides a substantial contamination by hydrogen has been found, the concentration being lower in those samples exposed to argon.
