Abstract

Objective To assess the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI). Methods We systemically translated the English version of CBI into Chinese and made an evaluation of the Chinese version. We used the Chinese version of CBI to measure the caregivers for 108 patents with dementia and analyzed the results as obtained for the reliability and validity using standard psychometric analyses. Results The CVI values for item content validity in the Chinese CBI were ranged from 0. 8~1.0, and the ratio of the CVI values for item content validity was 0.95. The five measurements of the table are physiological burden, sensibility burden, sociability burden, time - depending burden, development - limited burden. The relativity coefficient of each of the above five measurements, in view of the total scores in the scale table, is 0. 835, 0.912, 0. 881, 0. 890, and 0. 884, respectiw'.ly, with each having P < 0. 05 or 0.01. This primarily proved the structural validity of the scale table. The factor analysis obtained five common factors. The burden of each item is larger than 0.4. The construct validity was also confirmed by the factor analysis with 67.69% variance explained by the 5 factors. The reliability was proved by the total Cronbach alpha of 0.85, with the Cronbach alpha of physiological burden being 0. 83, that of the sensibility burden being 0.88, that of sociability burden being 0.82, that of time - depending burden being 0.90, and that of development - limited burden being 0.87. Conclusions An acceptable psychometric property of the Chinese version of CBI was indicated. CBI can be used as burden measurement of Chinese earegivers for senior dementia, in a further clinical study and nursing care. Key words: Psychometrics; The aged; .Dementia; Caregivers; Burden
