Abstract
With the development of fiber laser technology, double clad (DC) and triple clad (TC) fibers have found applications in diverse environmental conditions. Optical and mechanical reliabilities are therefore of significant importance. Optical reliability of double clad fiber has been investigated by some researchers with accelerated temperature and humidity aging tests, which reveal degradation mechanisms of low refractive index polymers below 150 degree C. When DC and TC fibers are subjected to ever higher optical power in even harsher conditions, optical and mechanical degradation is of increased concern. This paper investigates spectral attenuation, core material photon darkening effects, low refractive index coating material degradation and mechanical response of DC and TC fibers aged below and above 150 degree C. Also presented is a reliability and lifetime estimation for those DC and TC fibers used in high temperature and humidity environments.
