Abstract

Many existing mechanical components in operation are often subjected to sequentially varying loads. It is desired in practice to predict the residual lives for these components in a probabilistic way. In this paper, the formulas of transforming the operating times under sequential loading into an equivalent operating time at the constant stress level are developed, which can be used to calculate the conditional reliability of components. A probabilistic linear cumulative damage rule on residual life is obtained. Based on this rule, formulas for calculating the reliable residual life and the mean residual life under sequential loading are derived. An example for the residual fatigue life analysis is given to illustrate the methods developed here.
