Abstract

AbstractThis paper presents a reliability-based analysis of a shallow foundation subjected to a central vertical load, using the limit equilibrium theory. The reliability index is calculated by applying the first order reliability method (FORM). A deterministic model based on the Meyerhof equations is employed to compute the ultimate bearing capacity of the foundation. The concept of response surface method (RSM) is used for the assessment of the Hasofer–Lind reliability indexes by generating an approximate polynomial function for the performance function. In this study, unit weight and the soil shear strength parameters are considered as random variables. The optimization of the Hasofer-Lind reliability index is performed using a combination of response surface model and the multi-objective genetic algorithm.KeywordsReliability analysisShallow foundationRSMOptimizationGenetic algorithm
